Elk Hunt 2011

The Elk Hunt was a huge family affair this year.  It started with Jon leaving on Friday with both Lexi and Izzy so that they could hunt early Saturday morning.  I stayed with Josh so that he could go to football practice Friday night and his game on Saturday.

Saturday morning Jon and the girls woke up to snow for opening day.  Jon got them all bundled in snow boots and lots of layers and off they went.  To hear Jon tell the story the girls where quite the troopers.  They hiked and hiked without complaining.  After about 2 1/2 hours Izzy told Jon she could no longer feel her toes on one foot.  Jon took off her boot to check, some snow had gotten down inside her boot and her foot was freezing.  Her foot was so wet that he had to ring the water out of her sock.  Jon wrapped her feet in his  gloves and then put her on his shoulders and packed her the rest of the day until they got back to the truck.  Jon is such a great dad, he loves to hunt but loves his kids more because he never even bats an eye when it comes to taking the kids out with him.  It doesn't matter how much you remind kids to be quiet, they just can't.  Jon started taking Josh hunting when he was three.  Josh would ask Jon questions the entire time they were hunting.  He would ask how tall the mountain was, if there where any pumas or badgers around or sometimes he would want to know if they would need ropes to climb the mountain.  I can guarantee that taking the girls this time Jon was constantly having to remind them to be quiet.  I am thankful that he is so willing to give our children such awesome memories.  I don't think Josh will ever forget how he felt each time he has been with Jon and they have taken down an elk.

On Sunday and Monday Josh went hunting with Jon and the girls stayed with me.  We rode ATVs and played with Sabrina and Jared's puppies and just relaxed.  Jon was not successful this year but we had a great time hanging out with family and just enjoying our time.

Josh is so proud of his first kill with the shotgun he got for his birthday.

Lexi and Izzy patiently waiting for a spike elk to come by for Jon to shoot.

Josh driving for the first time.  I am not sure how I feel about this, it is probably a good thing I was not there.
This is the gun Jon decided to use this year to take down an elk.
