American West Heritage Center

Today the kids and I spent the afternoon at the American West Heritage Center. It was such a fun way to learn about our pioneer heritage and how the Cache Valley area was settled. We started at the old farm house and got to see how they lived and watched as some pioneer women cooked lunch on the wood burning stove. We then visited the blacksmith shop and the kids got to help make a cupholder. It was then on to the cow barn and horse barn to see all the animals. The next stop was riding the train and playing on the old tractors. This was Sam's favorite part. We panned for gold and traded it at the trading post for treats. We visited the woodworking shop and learned to use a planner and played with pioneer toys. Then we visited with a mountain man, wrote our names with a feather and ink, learned to tan hides and spent some time in an Indian teepee. Then it was time to visit the pioneer mud hut and play pioneer games. We finished off the day by buying some rock candy and walking through the museum. The kids loved all the hands on activities and learned a lot. I like that they got learn something new under the disguise of fun.
